Roque, a UP alumnus, and former UP law professor told his critics: “Medyo-medyo slow sila to gets, ‘no? Hindi po talaga UP ang kalaban.”

He stressed in an interview with Unang Hirit on Wednesday, July 1, that the real “enemy” remains to be the Coronavirus Disease.

“Ang kaaway po natin ay COVID-19, kaya lang po ginagamit ng UP ang mathematical models para mag-forecast kung ilan sa atin ang magkakaroon ng COVID-19,” Roque explained.

On Tuesday, the presidential spokesman congratulated the Philippines after COVID-19 cases in the country did not breach to 40,000 by the end of June as cited in the previous UP prediction.

“Panalo na tayo. We beat the UP prediction po. We beat it, so congratulations Philippines. Let’s do it again in July. We are winning,” he said.

Based on the record of the Department of Health (DOH), the Philippines has only registered about 36,000 cases of COVID-19.

However, instead of gaining praise, critics like Bayan secretary-general Renato Reyes and Senator Risa Hontiveros, lambasted Harry Roque over his congratulatory message.

“No, Harry. We did not win squat. The self-congratulations is grossly misinformed and intellectually dishonest,” Renato Reyes said.

“Hala. COVID-19 ang kalaban, hindi UP,” Risa Hontiveros on the other hand wrote in a Twitter response according to GMA News Online.

  1. ‘The world looks yellow through jaundiced eyes’ strikes again! Do you even understand what you are reacting at Reyes and Hontiveros? So you are not happy that Roque is happy we did not reach the 40,000 mark, contrary to a UP study? Do you even understand what and how scientific PREDICTIONS are made? LET ME TELL YOU – sophisticated statistical modelling softwares and computer programs are used to make predictions of this kind, not from crystal balls. What that means is simply that the prediction made from these softwares and programs will only be accurate if the data you input is correct, adequate, reliable and right. In short, you get unreliable predictions with ‘garbage in, garbage out’, or don’t you know that already? When the prediction fails, alibis are given. One math expert says the difference between the actual data with their prediction falls within the 10% margin of error. My god, what kind of a prediction is that! It is no different from what you get with a crystal ball! We in the scientific community make conclusions from differences with not more than 5% margin of error, sometimes we are even required to diminish that margin of error to less than 1%. So what’s your take wise guys?
