Roque, Vergeire ‘Only Allowed’ To Speak For Government, Says Medialdea

SPOX Roque and DOH Usec Vergeire were only allowed to speak for the government regarding COVID-19 matters, according to Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea.

Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea on Thursday said that the presidential spokesperson Harry Roque and the undersecretary of the Department of Health Maria Rosario Vergeire were only allowed to speak for the government regarding matters about the coronavirus disease.

This, however, as Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea didn’t state his reason for the sudden change in the government’s communications strategy.

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque told reporters that he wasn’t informed of Medialdea’s decision, adding that he deferred to the construction of Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles on the said memorandum.

Prior to Medialdea’s directive, Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles, the spokesperson for the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases, presented “almost daily briefings” regarding the country’s response to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.
