Japan started charging plastic bags to customers.

Retailers in Japan on Wednesday already started charging plastic bags to customers in order to curb Japanese customers’ love for plastic packaging.

Shops and convenience stores could decide how much to charge customers for plastic bags, with a common price being 3 yen. Other shoppers may tend to bring their own bag instead of paying charges for plastic bags.

Foreign visitors who were already in Japan were often surprised by charges on plastic packaging as lots of convenience stores wrapped individual bananas in plastic.

The United Nations (UN) said that Japan produced a lot of plastic packaging waste per capita compared to any nation apart from the United States. According to a report on ABS-CBN News, campaigners criticized Tokyo for “moving too slowly” on decreasing plastic consumption in the country.

As stated in its recent policy document, Japan had vowed to curb the “excessive use” of plastics.

The Japanese government said that the country introduced its nationwide fee that was aimed at prompting customers to think twice if a bag was necessary and helping people in order to review their lifestyles.
