JUST IN: Bolivia President Jeanine Anez Tests Positive for COVID-19

Jeanine Anez, the interim President of Bolivia revealed on Thursday that she has tested positive for Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19).

Earlier, she took to the micro-blogging site, Twitter to share the sad news.

“I’ve tested positive for COVID-19, I’m fine, I will work from isolation,” she said.

According to the 53-year-old politician, she will remain under isolation for approximately 14 days before taking another test to determine whether she has recovered or not from COVID-19.

Jeanine Anez is the second leader from South America who has tested positive for COVID-19 after Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro revealed on Tuesday that he’s infected with the dreaded disease.

“I feel well, I feel strong, I am going to keep working remotely from my isolation, and I want to thank all the Bolivians who are working to help us in this health crisis,” Jeanine Anez said.

Meanwhile, at least seven ministers including the country’s health minister, have been tested positive for COVID-19 in Bolivia.

The government of Bolivia was supposed to conduct general elections this coming September 6 but it was postponed due to the Novel Coronavirus pandemic.

Last October, widespread protests were launched in Bolivia ousting the former president and leftist leader Evo Morales.

Jeanine Anez, a former Senator from the opposition succeeded the post and was declared as the interim president.

She was hesitant to run for a full position but eventually announced that she will be rooting for the post in the upcoming elections alongside presidential aspirant Jorge Tuto Quiroga.

As of posting, Bolivia has already recorded over 42,000 cases of COVID-19 with 1,500 deaths as per data retrieved by Reuters.
