Motorized Banca Operator in Samar Dies After Struck by Lightning
A 23-year-old motorized banca operator in Zumarraga, Samar identified as Romulo Papelerin died after struck by lightning last weekend.
On Sunday (June 8, 2020), Romulo Papelerin is currently detaching the rope tied to the motorized banca when furious lightning struck him. The man is planning to have a weekend beach getaway but the incident ruined his plan.
Zumarraga police Staff Sergeant Mat Jomel Tañega said that the Papelerin was standing at the rear part of the motorized banca when heavy rain poured down and the lightning struck the victim.
“As he (Papelerin) was pulling the rope of the motorized banca because they were about to leave, there was a sudden downpour followed by a lightning that hit the victim who was standing at the rear portion of the banca,” Tañega said.
The helpless victim was rushed at the Samar Provincial Hospital in Catbalogan City but he was declared dead-on-arrival. Luckily, no other passengers survived and did not obtain injuries due to the incident.
