Google To Combat Visually-misleading Information, Adds Fact-check Labels To Images

Google added fact-check labels to images in order to combat visually-misleading information about those images.

Google on Monday said that the company added its fact-check labels to different images in order to combat visually-misleading information about those images.

This, as Google said that its new fact-check labels would be attached to the underlying webpages of videos and photos which may appear in a Google search.

Harris Cohen, the product manager of Google, said that the company started surfacing fact-check information in Google Images in order to help its users navigate those issues and to make “more informed judgments” about what they just saw on the web.

Google’s new fact-check labels would be based on the ClaimReview database which was established by independent fact-checkers.

Harris Cohen also explained that when users opted to search on Google Images, they may see a “Fact Check” label under the thumbnail image results, adding that users would see a summary of the fact-check that appeared on the underlying web page when they tapped one of those results in order to view the said image in a larger format.

Cohen also said that those fact-check labels might appear both for fact-check articles about particular images and for fact-check articles that include a certain image in the story.

However, Google said that the new fact-check labels “won’t affect search rankings“, as such, Harris Cohen said that Google’s systems were designed to surface the most “relevant” and “reliable” information available — including from sources that provide fact-checks.
