Filipino Doctor Creates Cheap But High-Quality Ventilator To Help Fight Coronavirus Disease

A Filipino doctor identified as Dr. Abundio Balgos invented a cheap but high-quality ventilator to help fight the coronavirus disease.

Dr. Abundio Balgos, a pulmonologist and retired professor of the University of Philippines College of Medicine developed the ventilator with the help of a team of experts. He named the machine as “Ginhawa”.

Balgos said that the device aims to help COVID-19 patients since many hospitals in the country are suffering from a shortage of medical facilities including ventilators. ‘Ginhawa’ (Relief) machine costs 40 percent lower than other portable ventilators.

The Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD) of the Department of Science explained that at least half of the patients admitted in the intensive care units need ventilators especially in small hospitals.

“There are only approximately 1,500 working ventilators in the whole country, and if we get hit like China, Italy, and the U.S., we need more than 1,500 more ventilators,” Dr. Balgos said.

The new medical invention can be used for both kids and adults as it features the functions of a regular ventilator. This would be a great help to the Filipino people especially during this time of health crisis.

Aside from the low-cost ventilator, Dr. Balgos is working with several material engineers to discover the best process in sterilizing N95 and surgical masks.
