Ginni Rometty To Step Down In April 2020 As 1st Female CEO At IBM

IBM announced Thursday that Ginni Rometty will be leaving her position in April 2020. She was the first female CEO at IBM.

According to data from Catalyst, Ginni Rometty was one of 29 female CEOs leading S&P 500 companies as of this month. In a statement, IBM said that Rometty “reinvented more than 50% of IBM’s portfolio” during her term as CEO.

After Rometty, Arvind Krishna will take over as CEO starting April 6. Arvind has been the company’s senior vice president for cloud computing and cognitive software and he has a long career at IBM as well.

IBM spent $34 billion in order to buy Red Hat, a North Carolina-based software company, in 2019. According to IBM, it was the biggest acquisition in the company’s century-long history.

Red Hat CEO James Whitehurst was named by IBM as the new president of the company starting April 6.
