‘Hotdog’ band member Dennis Garcia died at the age of 69
Dennis Garcia, founder of the 70s band ‘Hotdog’, passed away last Saturday night, January 18.
His youngest daughter Isa shared the sad news through a post on Facebook. Dennis is tagged as the pioneer of the “Manila Sound”. His older brother Rene Garcia, who was also part of the popular band, passed away in 2018.
Together, they introduced the Manila Sound sub-genre in the Philippine music industry. During the height of their career, in the middle of the 70s decade, the brothers were instrumental in ushering the golden age of Original Pilipino Music, based on the report from ABS-CBN.
The band popularized several songs that are still recognized until now such as Manila, Annie Batungbakal, Bongga Ka Day, Langit na Naman, and Beh Buti Nga. Though new bands and different genres of music became popular in the Philippines, ‘Hotdog’ was still in demand in reunion concerts.
When the elder Garcia died, the band still continued performing in popular venues such as Hard Rock Café, 19 East Bar & Grill and Bar 360 of Resorts World Manila. Aside from his music, Dennis Garcia also did a great job when it comes to the field of advertising and visual arts, based on the report.
In 2011, he shared the possible reason why their music is still being recognized even by the younger generation. “The remarkable staying power can also be attributed to the subject matter of the songs and the style of writing – simple, down to earth, unpretentious, real. And those qualities are what a great legacy is made of,” the music legend said.
With his death, he will truly be missed by his fans, family, wife Pam and children Angela, Paolo and Isa.
