Malaysia To Allow Businesses To Continue Operations Starting May 4

Malaysia will allow businesses to continue their operations starting May 4, according to Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

The Prime Minister of Malaysia on Friday said that the government will allow businesses to continue their operations starting Monday, May 4.

This, as Muhyiddin Yassin, the Prime Minister of Malaysia, said that the government “partially” eased the restrictions implemented to contain the spread of COVID-19 or coronavirus disease 2019.

Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, in a televised address, said that Malaysia was ready to start the “controlled and cautious” reopening of economic activities in the country. However, he added that mass gatherings that involved close contacts will be prohibited to reopen. Also, schools and universities in the country will remain close, according to Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

Muhyiddin also said that the Malaysian government has decided to reopen economic sectors cautiously by implementing strict health standard operating procedures. He added that the decision was made based on the advice of the health ministry and based on “data collected and best practices established by the World Health Organization.

According to Muhyiddin, some of the strict health standard operating procedures may include:

  • wearing masks
  • practicing social distancing
  • maintaining high levels of personal hygiene

Also, the Prime Minister urged employers to allow working from home and encouraged employees to arrive in their offices on alternate days.

As per the report, Muhyiddin said that the Malaysian government had lost MYR 63 billion (equivalent to more or less PHP 742 billion) over six weeks due to movement and travel restrictions, and might have lost an additional of MYR 35 billion (equivalent to more or less PHP 412 billion) if movement and travel restrictions had been extended by another month.
