Pantone officially unveiled the Color of the Year 2022
COLOR OF THE YEAR — Pantone Color Institute officially announced that “Very Peri” (Pantone 17-3938) was the company’s pick for Color of the Year 2022.
What made this decision unique in its 22-year legacy in forecasting a prime hue was that it’s the company’s first time to create a new color in order to banner a year.
With its group of experts, Pantone looked into different fields — from arts, entertainment industry, and fashion world to new lifestyles, playstyles, and socio-economic conditions — in naming its Color of the Year for over two decades.
Through the years, the prediction had influenced product development and purchasing decisions in multiple industries — including home furnishings, fashion, and industrial design, as well as graphic design and product packaging.
Pantone Color Institute Vice President Laurie Pressman said that the Color of the Year reflected what’s taking place in global culture, expressing what people were looking for that color can hope to answer.

“As society continues to recognize color as a critical form of communication, and a way to express and affect ideas and emotions and engage and connect, the complexity of this new red-violet infused blue hue highlights the expansive possibilities that lay before us,” Pressman said.
Very Peri was described as a symbol of the “global zeitgeist of the moment” and the transition people were going through.
The color mirrored elements of modern life, virtual world, and the sense of new, giving a nod to the rising trends in gaming, rising artistic community in the digital space, and expanding popularity of the metaverse.
Pantone Color Institute Executive Director Leatrice Eiseman said that the selection of Very Peri brought a “novel perspective and vision of the trusted and beloved blue color family”.
“Encompassing the qualities of the blues, yet at the same time possessing a violet-red undertone, Pantone 17-3938 Very Peri displays a spritely, joyous attitude and dynamic presence that encourages courageous creativity and imaginative expressions,” Eiseman said.
