President Jovenel Moise reported the first two cases of coronavirus disease or COVID-19 in Haiti as his government adopted extraordinary measures to contain its spread.
This, as Haiti President Jovenel Moise made an announcement during his address which was televised on state media, reporting that authorities have found the first two COVID-19 cases in the country.
Haiti President Jovenel Moise called for calm, saying that his government has “always committed to transparency when it comes to managing this pandemic.” The president also warned against selling “medicines and hygiene and health products” on the black market.
Haiti was the Carribean’s poorest and most densely populated country and the arrival of COVID-19 spurred the government to implement a series of restrictive measures — such as 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. curfew, ban on gatherings of more than 10 people, closure on schools, universities and vocational schools, suspension of work in factories, closure on borders, suspension of all commercial flights, and closure on all passenger points of entry.
