Lawyer Victor Rodriguez, the spokesperson for Bongbong Marcos, explained in an interview on CNN Philippines that the non-filing of ITR was different from tax evasion.

He also claimed that the petition filed against the former senator was just a propaganda of “yellow wannabe political assassins”.

According to Rodriguez, the former senator was sitting as governor of Ilocos Norte from 1982 to 1985 and his taxes should have been filed by the provincial capitol.

Furthermore, Rodriguez tagged the petition against the former senator as a “nuisance”, adding that the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) was being used as a platform for propaganda.

Rodriguez also maintained that the tax case against the former senator has already been litigated and answered many years back.

Also on Thursday, COMELEC Spokesperson Director James Jimenez said that the process of resolving petitions for the cancelation of certificates of candidacy (COC) could take at least 6 weeks.

According to Jimenez, the poll body was also handling several petitions for cancellations of certificates of candidacy aside from the one filed against the former senator.

Meanwhile, the hashtag #DisqualifyMarcos became trending on social media and members of Akbayan Partylist held the rally outside the office of the Commission on Elections.
