President Duterte honored health workers and frontliners on National Heroes’ Day.
On Monday, President Rodrigo Duterte honored health workers and essential frontliners battling the pandemic as the Philippines commemorated National Heroes’ Day.
In a video message, President Duterte honored modern-day heroes — medical frontliners and essential workers — who sacrificed their lives, comfort, and security to serve Filipinos.
“I join the entire Filipino nation in celebrating National Heroes’ Day. With pride and joy, we honor the noble sacrifices of our ancestors who fought to celebrate our country and establish the thriving democracy that we are today,” President Duterte said.
President Duterte also urged the public to “learn from the valiant example of the past and present heroes” and build on them in order to achieve a stronger future for all.

In a separate statement, President Duterte lauded the country’s health workers and essential workers as “new breed of heroes” who readily answered the call to fight in a “war against one of the greatest threats to our way of life”.
President Duterte also said that those people who “selflessly” put their lives on the line for other people have earned their rightful place among the nation’s illustrious.
“Their names will not be etched on any edifice, statues will not be erected in their honor, banknotes will not be graced by their portraits, and their individual explores will not be immortalized on the pages of history books,” President Duterte said.
On Monday, Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea led the wreath-laying rites at the Libingan ng Mga Bayani.
National Heroes Day was celebrated in order to pay homage to those who struggled for the country’s freedom. It was initially celebrated on November 30, but the national holiday was later moved to the last Monday of August in order to mark the Cry of Balintawak or Sigaw ng Pugad Lawin.
