On Saturday, the Department of Health (DOH) had called on the public to be extra cautious as the Delta COVID-19 variant was “highly transmissible”.

Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said that the Delta COVID-19 variant carried at least 1,000 times more viruses as compared to the other COVID-19 variants of concern.

Itong Delta variant na ito ay napaka infectious. Ibig sabihin madali po siyang makapanghawa dahil ang isang tao na meron nitong variant ay isang libo mahigit compared to the other variants of concern ang kanyang viral load,” Vergeire said.

Also, she agreed with the international reports, that the said variant was as “contagious as chickenpox”.

According to a report on Reuters, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) had described the Delta COVID-19 variant as being as “transmissible as chickenpox” and warned it could cause severe disease.

Based on a report, the US CDC report said that Delta COVID-19 variant was highly contagious, likely more severe than other COVID-19 variants and breakthrough coronavirus infections may be as transmissible as unvaccinated coronavirus cases.

Despite this new development in the Delta COVID-19 variant, Reuters reported that the CDC’s figures showed that the COVID-19 vaccines were highly effective in preventing serious illness, hospitalization, and death.

According to Vergeire, most of those who were affected by the Delta COVID-19 variant were not vaccinated against COVID-19. Vergeire then urged all eligible Filipinos to get vaccinated.

The vaccines that we have currently have in the country, all of these can protect you from severe disease and hospitalization,” Vergeire said.
