YouTube tested a new tool that will allow viewers to have a new way to tip creators.
YouTube recently announced that it had tested a new tool that would allow viewers to have a new way to tip content creators.
YouTube’s new tool called “Super Thanks” that would allow users tip creators was currently being tested on the platform. The said feature would allow users to applaud a creator by choosing from one of four price points between USD 2 and USD 50 (or the regional currency equivalent).
Users will see a celebratory animation on-screen and a colorful comment with their name appeared below the video in the comments section when they purchased one of four options. Creators themselves will then be able to respond to those messages in the same way they can on regular comments.
YouTube had been testing the said tool under a separate name “Viewer Applause” over the past year. Now named “Super Thanks”, the said tool was available in beta in 68 countries on desktop, iOS, and Android.

“Super Thanks” was the fourth option YouTube had added for directly paying creators. The said platform also offered channel memberships, which allow creators to offer monthly subscriptions.
Then there’s “Super Stickers” and “Super Chat”, which allow viewers to leave tips in chat during live streams. But where “Super Chat” and “Super Stickers” worked on live feeds, “Super Thanks” can be used across all eligible uploads.
Barbara Macdonald, a product manager of paid digital goods at YouTube, told The Verge that the ability to manually input other amounts was “definitely something that we would be interested in looking to add in” while the said tool was launching with four set payment amounts from which to choose.
Based on a report on The Verge, creators must be part of the YouTube Partner Program first in order to receive access to “Super Thanks”. Macdonald said that the beta launch will be a “randomized rollout” before coming to all YouTube Partner Program members later this year.
