The Android Earthquake Alerts System used your Android phone’s accelerometer in order to detect the initial P-wave generated by quakes. Your Android device sent a city-level location that didn’t include street address or zip code to Google’s earthquake detection server.

Google then verified before sending a loud notification that included location and magnitude before the destructive S-wave hits. The said alert can take over your phone screen and provided a “drop, cover, and hold” reminder.

As per the report, this system was currently available for the Philippines, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyz Republic, Turkey, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan.

Looking ahead, Google planned to globally launch this capability over the coming year, starting in countries with higher earthquake risks and also working down from there. Wide availability of Android devices with Google Play services will be required.

Google’s stated goal was to create the “world’s largest earthquake detection network.” It came as establishing a ground network of seismometers, like USGS ShakeAlert in the West Coast and in California, wasn’t always possible.

Based on a report, Android users can opt-out from device Settings > Location > Advanced > Earthquake Alerts. This system had been in testing since last year, but Google just started sending notifications in two countries last April.

Previously, Google shared what the Android Earthquake Alerts System captured after a Los Angeles tremor in September of 2020.
