The DENR will plant coconut trees in Manila Bay.
An advisory sent to reporters on Tuesday stated that the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) will plant coconut trees in Manila Bay.
In a report on Manila Bulletin, DENR Secretary Roy A. Cimatu will lead a planting activity on Wednesday with coconut trees along the baywalk area in Roxas Boulevard, Manila.
As stated in an advisory sent to reporters last Tuesday, the said activity was in relation to the “continuing activities and efforts of the department for the clean-up and rehabilitation of Manila Bay”.
Perhaps the most famous — or infamous — component of the rehabilitation efforts was the artificial beach along the baywalk. Crushed dolomite rocks were being used to approximate the appearance of white sand for the beach.

There had been a public outcry against the continued dumping of dolomite — which the Department of Environment and Natural Resources obviously had to procure — amidst the continuing fight against the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic in the Philippines.
The DENR’s rehabilitation of Manila Bay started last 2020 with a budget of PHP 389 million and the funds were allocated back in 2019, or the year before the emergence of the coronavirus pandemic.
Officials from the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Department of Tourism (DOT), and Manila City government were expected to grace the coconut tree planting activity.
Also stated in the advisory, the officials will deliver “messages of support” during the said event.
