The FDA approved the emergency use of Moderna COVID-19 vaccine in the Philippines.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved the emergency use of Moderna COVID-19 vaccine in the Philippines.
This, as the COVID-19 vaccines developed by Moderna were the seventh to be granted emergency use authorization in the country, next to Pfizer-BioNTech, AstraZeneca-Oxford, Sinovac’s CoronaVac, India’s Bharat Biotech, Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen Pharmaceuticals, and Gamaleya’s Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccines.
FDA Director-General Eric Domingo announced in a briefing that the Food and Drug Administration was granting an emergency use authorization (EUA) to Zuellig Pharma Corp. for the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine after a thorough and rigorous review by medical and regulatory experts using the currently available unpublished and published data.
An initial shipment of nearly 200,000 Moderna COVID-19 vaccine doses, which was co-developed by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID)’s Vaccine Research Center in the United States, was scheduled to arrive on June 15 in the Philippines.

Earlier, the Philippines signed a tripartite agreement with Moderna for 20 million COVID-19 vaccine doses.
Under the tripartite deal, 13 million COVID-19 vaccine doses will be allocated to the national government, while 7 million COVID-19 vaccine doses will go to the private sector.
Vaccine czar Secretary Carlito Galvez said last month the Philippines was also mulling to procure Moderna’s COVID-19 booster shot candidate.
“We found out that Moderna is developing a booster. ‘Yung booster na yun ay pwedeng gamitin kahit na Sinovac o kahit na Gamaleya ang ating nauna. Ang kanilang dinedevelop… [na] booster na pwedeng gamitin kahit sa anong vaccine ay darating either September or October so ang balak namin, yung five million, instead na yung bibilhin namin ay yung vaccine, we might buy the booster already. ‘Yan ang titingnan natin,” Galvez said at that time.
