During the Laging Handa briefing, PHA President Dr. Orly Bugarin urged Filipinos to get inoculated even if they’re diagnosed with hypertension or cardiovascular diseases.

According to Bugarin, there were no hard evidence yet that showed COVID-19 vaccines had adverse effects on people with high blood pressure so far.

Bugarin also said that cardiovascular conditions weren’t contraindications in getting vaccinated against COVID-19 — a statement supported by Dr. Alejandro Diaz, a neurologist from St. Luke’s Medical Center.

Citing information from the Department of Health’s (DOH) Resbakuna Program, Diaz said in the same briefing that COVID-19 vaccines could still be given to people despite their hypertension.

However, Diaz said that the said information wasn’t being cascaded to some vaccinators.

Nakita ko ‘yan sa isang TV feed eh, na mataas ang BP hindi nila bibigyan [ng bakuna]. Hindi tama ‘yun. ‘Yung may mga hypertension is not a contraindication para hindi bigyan ng COVID 19 vaccine,” Diaz said.

Diaz also said that a patient with hypertension shouldn’t be told to go home but instead to wait for their hypertension to subside.

Meanwhile, Bugarin explained that some patients may experience high blood pressure before they get inoculated because of nervousness or the patient didn’t take his regular medicines.

Bugarin then advised that patients who have a blood pressure of 180/120 and were exhibiting symptoms of their heart conditions should be checked before getting vaccinated against COVID-19.

He also reminded patients to make sure that they took their maintenance medications two weeks prior to their vaccination schedule. Patients were also asked to refrain from drinking coffee, smoking, taking pain relievers and medicines for colds.
