Alan Peter Cayetano Admits Defeat in Senate Leadership Battle
ALAN PETER CAYETANO – The senator has accepted that he will no longer remain Senate President after Senator Joel Villanueva decided to join the new majority bloc. This move gives the opposing group enough support to elect a new leader for the Senate.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Cayetano said he would not stand in the way of the vote and acknowledged that leadership in a democracy is temporary. He emphasized that public office is not something a person owns but a responsibility entrusted to them for a limited time. He also expressed his willingness to cooperate with whoever is legally chosen as the next Senate President.
“I will not stand in the way of that vote. No leadership in a democracy is ever permanent; every office we hold is a loan, never a possession. To whomever this chamber lawfully elects, I extend my congratulations and my cooperation in advance,” he said.

Cayetano thanked the public for the opportunity to serve in the position and said it had been one of the greatest honors of his life. Although he is stepping down from the Senate presidency, he said he remains committed to serving the Filipino people as a public servant.

He also stressed that while positions, titles, and political majorities may change, the public’s right to know the truth remains important. Cayetano promised to continue seeking answers and accountability regarding the issues he believes need to be investigated. He said he intends to keep fighting for transparency and justice even outside Senate leadership.
In closing, Cayetano expressed gratitude to God for the chance to hold the office and assured the public that his commitment to serving them would continue beyond any title or position. He said his dedication to protecting the people’s right to the truth would remain unchanged for as long as he is able to serve.
