Saleema Refran Steps Down from GMA News for a Government Post
SALEEMA REFRAN – The veteran journalist has officially stepped down from GMA Integrated News after 15 years of service to take on a new role in government as the Public Information Officer of the Office of the Ombudsman. Her departure marks the end of a long and meaningful career in broadcast journalism, where she covered numerous major events and worked alongside many colleagues in the field and newsroom.
In a farewell message shared on April 30, 2026, she expressed deep gratitude for her time at the network. She reflected on the many people she met, the stories she told, and the lessons she learned throughout her journey. She described her experience as a great honor, being part of a trusted and respected news organization. She also recalled the emotional final weeks of her stay, filled with both tears and happy memories.
Refran gave special recognition to the technical teams, camera crew, and fellow reporters who supported her throughout the years. She highlighted how their teamwork made every story possible, especially during challenging assignments such as natural disasters and the pandemic. She acknowledged that her work was never done alone, but through the collective effort, dedication, and hard work of the people around her.

She also thanked viewers who followed her career and trusted her reporting over the years, emphasizing that her commitment to public service continues in her new role. While she is no longer seen delivering news on television, she reassured the public that she remains active in serving them, now from a different platform.

Colleagues, including fellow anchor Emil Sumangil, expressed support and happiness for her decision, encouraging her to continue honest public service in her new position. Although she has left the newsroom, Refran remains close to her former workplace, as the Ombudsman’s office is located near the GMA Network, making her transition both professional and personal.
