Parish Stops Tradition After Alleged Pigeon Abuse at Malabon Church
The Diocese of Kalookan issued a statement following reports of possible animal abuse during the Salubong ceremony at the Diocesan Shrine and Parish of the Immaculate Conception in Malabon. A video circulated online appeared to show a live pigeon being restrained, its wings forcibly spread, and tied to a rod as part of the ritual.
The diocese explained that the use of live pigeons has been a long-standing tradition in the parish, intended as a safer alternative to using children dressed as angels. However, in response to public concern, the parish announced that this practice would be discontinued to prevent harm to animals and align with more compassionate and responsible standards.
The Diocese emphasized that expressions of faith should always be guided by kindness and responsibility. They highlighted that caring for God’s creation is a way of honoring the Risen Lord, who calls on the faithful to protect and respect all forms of life.
