Estranged Father of Meghan Markle Enjoys Recovery and Love in Cebu
THOMAS MARKLE SR. – The estranged father of Meghan Markle, is reportedly in a relationship with a Filipina nurse in Cebu, Philippines.
According to a report by the Daily Mail on March 29, 2026, the 81-year-old retired Hollywood lighting director met Rio Canedo, a local nurse, in mid-December 2025 while he was admitted to a rehabilitation facility following serious health complications. Canedo reportedly assisted in his care during recovery, and the two developed a close bond, eventually moving in together.
Markle Sr. described feeling blessed and happy after years of emotional hardship, particularly due to his strained relationship with Meghan. He expressed gratitude for his health, the companionship he found with Canedo, and the quiet life he leads in the Philippines. He emphasized that their relationship developed naturally and that he treasures the support and care she provides.

The report highlighted Markle Sr.’s health challenges, including emergency treatment for a blood clot that led to the amputation of his left leg below the knee, ongoing physiotherapy, pneumonia, and plans for a prosthetic limb. Canedo is said to assist him with daily activities, diet, and rehabilitation exercises.
Markle Sr. moved to Cebu with his son, Thomas Markle Jr., in 2025 after experiencing multiple health issues, including heart attacks and a stroke. They initially stayed in a hotel before transferring to a high-rise apartment, considered upscale locally, with a monthly rent of around PHP36,000. The tropical climate, high humidity, and heat have posed additional challenges to his recovery.

In interviews, Markle Sr. said he chose the Philippines for its friendly people, accessible healthcare, and quieter, more affordable lifestyle, hoping to spend his remaining years away from past “drama.” Despite his relocation and new relationship, there is no indication that he has reconciled with Meghan Markle or Prince Harry, and he has not met his grandchildren. His relationship with Canedo appears to bring him personal happiness and stability during this stage of life.
