Young Mother Dies While Waiting for Typhoon Tino Cash Aid in Mandaue City

Mother Collapses and Dies During Validation for Typhoon Tino Financial Aid

TYPHOON TINO AID – A young mother in Mandaue City tragically passed away while waiting to have her eligibility verified for government financial assistance.

Thirty-one-year-old Mary Christ Cuizon arrived at the Barangay Opao gymnasium on March 11 to process her validation for cash aid provided to victims of Typhoon Tino. She was among the beneficiaries entitled to receive ₱5,000 to help repair her partially damaged home.

While waiting in line, Mary Christ suddenly collapsed and lost consciousness. Her father, Jenniffer Cuizon, expressed the family’s deep grief, particularly because reports suggested it took nearly 30 minutes before she received medical attention. The family emphasized that she had recently given birth six months ago and was still recovering, but had assured them she felt well before leaving home that morning. The incident left four young children orphaned, including the youngest, who is still an infant.

The family has called on authorities to release CCTV footage from the gymnasium to determine whether there was a delay or negligence on the part of personnel or the on-site medical team. They want to understand the cause of the delayed response and ensure accountability.

In response, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and the local government of Mandaue expressed condolences and promised burial assistance and additional financial support for the surviving family. The City Legal Office has begun an investigation to determine if any staff at the venue were responsible for lapses in care.

Meanwhile, the Typhoon Tino financial assistance refers to cash aid provided by the Philippine government to families and individuals affected by Typhoon Tino, which caused damage to homes, property, and livelihoods. This program is usually part of the DSWD’s emergency cash aid initiatives, designed to help victims recover from natural disasters.
