Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte Calls Out Suntay for Inappropriate Comments About Anne Curtis
JOY BELMONTE – The Quezon City Mayor has told Congressman Bong Suntay to publicly apologize after he made inappropriate comments about actress Anne Curtis. During a recent House committee hearing, Suntay said he saw Anne Curtis at a hotel and admitted he had “desires” about her, though he claimed it was just in his imagination.
His words quickly drew criticism from many people online, which Mayor Belmonte also saw. She pointed out that Suntay’s comments go against the values Quezon City has worked hard to promote, especially the protection and respect of women. The city has been creating safe spaces and opportunities for women, and such remarks are unacceptable, particularly during Women’s Month.
The mayor also reminded the public that Suntay used to be a member of the Quezon City Council and was the majority floor leader when the council passed the Gender and Development Code and the 2016 “Bawal Bastos” Ordinance. These laws clearly state that rude, harmful, and disrespectful remarks in public are not allowed. His behavior goes against the rules he once helped establish.
Belmonte said that these rules reflect the city’s values, and officials should lead by example. Any actions that disrespect women should be addressed, and leaders must take responsibility for their words. She called on Suntay to admit his mistake, apologize properly, and conduct himself with the dignity his position requires. The public expects leaders to protect women’s safety, respect, and equality.
Meanwhile, Jasmine Curtis-Smith, Anne Curtis’s sister, reacted to Suntay’s comments. She shared multiple posts online criticizing his mindset and described his remarks as shocking and unacceptable. She also highlighted messages from other netizens about potential legal or ethical complaints under laws that protect women from harassment, both in public and online. Jasmine admitted that her frustration over the incident even affected her sleep.
