Rowena Guanzon Warns: Philippines Vulnerable Amid U.S.-Iran Tensions

Rowena Guanzon Calls Out Lack of National Defense as U.S. and Iran Conflict Escalates

ROWENA GUANZON – The former Commission on Elections Commissioner has expressed serious concern over the potential risk to the Philippines amid escalating tensions between the United States, Israel, and Iran.

In a Facebook post on March 2, 2026, Guanzon warned that the presence of numerous U.S. military bases in the country could make the Philippines a target if Iran decided to retaliate. She emphasized that the nation lacks missile defense systems, leaving its people extremely vulnerable to attacks.

Guanzon noted that if Iran were to launch missiles, similar to its recent actions in the Middle East, there would be nothing to intercept them, putting millions of Filipinos at risk. She criticized the government for failing to allocate funds to purchase missile interceptors, claiming that resources had allegedly been misappropriated by corrupt politicians and their allies. According to her, these officials would reportedly flee the country with their families on private jets in the event of conflict, leaving ordinary citizens to rely solely on prayer.

The comments come in the wake of United States President Donald Trump formally announcing on February 28, 2026, the start of a major combat operation alongside Israel against Iran. The announcement has fueled fears of broader regional instability, prompting officials, experts, and citizens to question the preparedness of countries like the Philippines that host foreign military facilities.
