Volunteer Firefighters Under Investigation by BFP for Taking Alcohol from Supermarket Destroyed by Fire in QC

BFP Investigates Volunteer Firefighters Over Alleged Alcohol Theft at Burned Quezon City Supermarket

BFP – The Bureau of Fire Protection is investigating allegations that some volunteer firefighters took bottles of alcohol from a supermarket that was destroyed by fire in Barangay Pasong Putik, North Fairview, Quezon City, in the early hours of Wednesday, January 28. Authorities stated that the agency will not ignore the claims, especially since they involve individuals expected to assist during emergencies.

The fire reportedly started around 4:44 a.m. and quickly intensified, reaching the fifth alarm level by 5:16 a.m. Firefighters from multiple units worked for several hours to control the blaze, which was finally declared extinguished at approximately 8:01 a.m. Due to the scale of the incident, a large number of responders were deployed to manage the fire and conduct post-incident assessments.

According to initial reports, the Bureau received information that while responders were focused on putting out the fire and inspecting the site afterward, some volunteer firefighters were allegedly seen taking bottles of alcohol from the burned supermarket. The report raised public concern, prompting the agency to address the matter openly.

BFP spokesperson Fire Superintendent Anthony Arroyo clarified that there is no confirmation that the individuals involved were official members of the Bureau. He emphasized that a thorough investigation is underway to verify the identities of those involved and determine whether the allegations are accurate. Approximately 30 volunteer firefighter groups responded to the incident, and all potential individuals linked to the report are currently undergoing verification.

The Bureau stated that if the accusations are proven true, those responsible could face criminal charges and may have their certificates of competency revoked. The agency stressed that such actions, if confirmed, violate the standards expected of emergency responders.

The BFP also reminded all firefighters and volunteers to maintain discipline, professionalism, and integrity at all times, particularly during disasters. The agency reiterated that public trust is crucial in emergency operations and must be protected through proper conduct and accountability.
