LGBTQIA+ Members Involved in Simbang Gabi Fight

Scuffle Breaks Out During Simbang Gabi in Daet

A scuffle broke out during Simbang Gabi at Freedom Park in Daet, Camarines Norte, involving members of the LGBTQIA+ community and a woman. A social media video showed a group grabbing the woman’s hair, escalating into a physical fight.

Police intervened to prevent further violence. One officer was seen holding a person by the neck, which some viewers criticized as excessive. The Daet Municipal Police clarified that their actions were necessary to maintain order and public safety, and no undue force was used. They emphasized that officers acted professionally and humanely.

Authorities also reminded the public, especially the youth, to show respect, discipline, and understanding during Simbang Gabi and the Christmas season to ensure safe and peaceful celebrations. The police assured that they are always ready to protect the community and maintain order.

“Muli, nananawagan kami sa lahat, lalo na sa kabataan, na pairalin ang paggalang, disiplina, at pag-unawa upang maging mapayapa at ligtas ang pagdiriwang ng Simbang Gabi at ng buong panahon ng Kapaskuhan,” the police said.

Meanwhile, Simbang Gabi is a cherished Filipino Christmas tradition consisting of nine consecutive Masses held from December 16 to 24, usually in the early morning or evening. The practice helps devotees prepare spiritually for the birth of Jesus Christ and is rooted in the belief that completing all nine Masses can bring blessings or fulfill a special wish.

Beyond its religious significance, Simbang Gabi is also a cultural celebration that brings communities together. Churches are often surrounded by stalls selling traditional Filipino delicacies like bibingka (rice cake) and puto bumbong (purple rice cake), creating a festive and communal atmosphere. The tradition reflects a unique blend of faith, culture, and social connection, making it both a spiritual journey and a beloved part of the Filipino Christmas experience.
