DepEd Reaffirms Commitment to Protecting Students Amid Abuse Allegations
The Department of Education (DepEd) has started an investigation into a reported child abuse case in Tondo, Manila, involving a teacher accused of forcing a student to eat a cockroach, reaffirming its strict policy against violence and highlighting the importance of student safety and well-being.
The incident came to light after a parent filed a complaint with the Schools Division Office of Manila. The report was also sent to the DepEd Central Office through the Learner Rights and Protection Division (LRPD) via the Learners TeleSafe Contact Center. DepEd emphasized that any action that harms a child has no place in schools and that protecting students is a top priority. Secretary Sonny Angara said the agency enforces a clear policy against all forms of abuse, threats, or violence toward students.
To keep the affected student safe, DepEd instructed the field office to take immediate steps, including adjusting class arrangements, providing counseling support, and closely monitoring the child’s condition. A separate investigation is also ongoing to look into related molestation claims, ensuring that all students involved are protected and properly supported.

DepEd assured the public that the investigation is being handled quickly and fairly, and that proper administrative and legal action will be taken against anyone found responsible, following the law.

Police earlier reported that the alleged incidents happened on October 25, 2025, inside the school. Authorities said a male student saw the teacher allegedly molesting another student in a restroom. While the female student involved did not file a complaint, the case escalated in November when the male student reported that he was forced to eat a cockroach. This led to a child abuse case against the teacher, who has since posted bail of ₱120,000.
