Antique Man Faces Charges for Burning Family Home After Mother Refuses to Buy Him Cellphone
A 35-year-old man from San Jose de Buenavista, Antique, was arrested after setting their house on fire when his mother refused to buy him a cellphone.
On Sunday night, November 9, in Barangay 6, the suspect, known as alias Kano, got into a heated argument with his 65-year-old mother, alias Rowena, after she declined his request to purchase a cellphone, according to police reports.
The disagreement turned violent when the son, out of anger, fetched gasoline and poured it inside their home before setting it ablaze.

The fire quickly spread, engulfing the entire house. Neighbors rushed to help, while firefighters and authorities responded to control the blaze. The flames were finally put out around 12:30 a.m., but the house was already completely destroyed.
The suspect’s elderly mother suffered burns on her foot while trying to escape the fire. She was immediately given medical attention and is now recovering. Meanwhile, her son was arrested by police and is now detained at the San Jose de Buenavista Municipal Police Station, facing charges of arson.
Police described the incident as a tragic reminder of how anger and lack of self-control can lead to devastating consequences. The suspect allegedly showed no resistance during his arrest and later admitted to what he did.

The local community expressed sympathy for the elderly mother, who lost her home and nearly her life in the fire. Authorities are also reminding families to seek help or counseling when faced with conflicts at home to prevent similar incidents.
As of this writing, the mother remains in shock due to the incident. Her neighbors are extending help as she rebuilds her life after the heartbreaking tragedy.
