Heavy Rains Cause Sudden Flood in Maasim
A sudden flash flood hit the town of Maasim in Sarangani Province on Monday afternoon, October 6, 2025, causing heavy flooding along the national highway in Barangay Poblacion, especially in the Tinago area. The rushing water, filled with mud, rocks, and debris from the nearby mountains, covered the road after the Tinago Creek overflowed.
Residents said the creek overflowed when it got blocked by fallen branches and other debris from the mountains. This caused the water to rise quickly and flood the highway. The continuous rains were caused by the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ), which has been bringing wet weather to parts of Mindanao.
By 7 p.m., the national highway connecting Maasim to General Santos City was still closed because of the thick mud and debris left on the road. According to the Maasim Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO), no one was injured, but several families living near the creek and low-lying areas were moved to safer places. They are now staying at the municipal gym, which is being used as a temporary shelter.

Local officials have asked residents near rivers, creeks, and flood-prone areas to evacuate early and stay alert as rains continue. The local government also reminded everyone through social media to keep updated with official weather reports and always put safety first.

Cleanup and road clearing operations are ongoing, and authorities are working to reopen the road as soon as possible. Officials also reminded the public to stay prepared, as flash floods can happen suddenly, especially in mountain areas. Thankfully, no casualties were reported, but the local government remains on alert as the rain continues to pour.
Meanwhile, a flash flood is a sudden and rapid flooding caused by heavy rain or a sudden water release, happening within minutes or hours.
