Sinkhole Found in Cebu After Magnitude 6.9 Earthquake

Huge Sinkhole Discovered in Daanbantayan, Cebu

CEBU – Residents of Daanbantayan are being warned to stay alert after a large sinkhole was discovered following the powerful 6.9-magnitude earthquake that struck the province on September 30, 2025.

The sinkhole, estimated to be three to four meters deep, was found in Sitio Mayjo, Barangay Paypay. Experts immediately inspected the site to assess the possible dangers. Among them was Dr. Ted Esguerra, a physician from the Philippine Mount Everest Team, who came with members of Valenzuela City’s Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO) and Makita Powertools. Dr. Esguerra explained that the sinkhole was slanted and measured about 160 by 224 inches wide.

During their visit, the team also spotted four more possible sinkholes along the shoreline. However, because it was high tide, they were unable to study them closely. Authorities said they will return to examine these areas again when the sea level is lower.

Geologists from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) are also set to investigate further in the coming days. Their study will focus on ground stability, risks to nearby residents, and whether more sinkholes might appear while aftershocks continue.

People living near the affected areas have been told to be extra careful. Officials explained that sinkholes, or sudden deep holes in the ground, are dangerous because they can expand without warning. These usually form after strong earthquakes, when the shaking weakens the soil or rocks underground.

For many residents in Daanbantayan, the discovery has brought fear and concern. Local leaders urged the public to stay alert and to immediately report any cracks in the ground, unusual sinking, or sudden soil movement.

While experts continue their investigations, families in the town are hoping for clear answers and assurance that their homes will remain safe. For now, the main advice is to stay watchful as Cebu continues to deal with the aftermath of the powerful earthquake.
