Court Dismisses All Charges Against Pura Luka Vega

All Criminal Cases Against Pura Luka Vega Dropped

PURA LUKA VEGA – The drag artist expressed deep gratitude to God after all criminal charges filed against them by religious groups were officially dismissed.

The charges stemmed from Pura’s controversial 2023 drag performance, where they portrayed a joyful version of Christ while dancing to an upbeat remix of the Catholic prayer “Ama Namin.” The performance sparked outrage and legal action, with critics claiming it was offensive and disrespectful to religious beliefs.

On Friday, September 19, the Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 306 released a ruling dismissing three counts of violating Article 201 of the Revised Penal Code. This law penalizes obscene or indecent performances, particularly those involving cybercrime under the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.

Presiding Judge Dolly Rose R. Bolante-Prado granted Pura’s motion for dismissal, known as a demurrer to evidence. This legal motion argued that the prosecution did not present sufficient evidence to continue with the case.

Rainbow Rights Philippines, an organization that supports LGBTQ+ rights and where Pura is an active member, shared the good news on Facebook. The group announced that all cases had been officially dismissed and expressed hope that the ruling would remain final without further legal challenges.

Pura also took to social media to share their relief and gratitude. On their X (formerly Twitter) account, Pura simply wrote: “Prayers answered. Thank you Lord!” The brief yet heartfelt message reflected their overwhelming emotions after the court’s decision.

This was not Pura’s first legal victory. Back in June, the Manila Regional Trial Court Branch 184 also acquitted them of similar charges under Article 201. With this latest ruling, Pura has now been fully cleared of all related cases, marking the conclusion of a long and challenging legal battle.
