Barangay Captain Jasmine Chan Denies Using Public Funds for Europe Trip

Barangay Captain Jasmine Chan Explains Europe Trip

JASMINE CHAN – The Barangay Captain of Basak, Lapu-Lapu City, has spoken up after social media criticism over her recent Europe trip, saying that no public funds were used.

In a post on Thursday, August 28, Chan explained that the trip was a gift from her husband as part of their newlywed celebration, and that she traveled alone to manage her clothing during the visit. She stressed that all her outfits and personal expenses came from her own earnings, investments, and savings since her college days. Chan apologized to residents, especially the Basakanons and other Opponganons, for any posts that may have been misunderstood, saying she only wanted to share her side of the story.

To show her commitment to transparency, Chan assured her constituents that all barangay funds are properly recorded and open to the public. She encouraged residents to attend the next Statement of Barangay Account (SOBA) meeting to see how their taxes are being used. She also invited anyone with questions to visit the barangay hall directly, stressing her dedication to serving the community fairly.

Her clarification came after netizens questioned the display of luxury during a time of hardship in Lapu-Lapu City. Some criticized public officials for showing wealth that does not match their salaries. Others defended Chan, saying that personal income earned through legal means, like family businesses and investments, is different from public funds, and officials should be allowed to enjoy their own money.

The issue has sparked a wider discussion on the lifestyle expected of public servants and the need for accountability. Many people said holding public office requires humility and honesty. At the same time, some argued that personal success should not be judged as long as public officials do their duties with integrity.
