K9 Dog in Viral Photo Appears Thin Following Training, Says RECU-NCR

RECU-NCR Explains Viral Photo of Thin K9 Dog

RECU-NCR — The Regional Explosive Canine Unit – National Capital Region has released a public statement in response to a viral photo of a K9 dog that appeared to be very thin. The photo, which quickly spread online, caused concern and criticism from people who were worried about the dog’s condition.

According to RECU-NCR, the dog in the photo is named “Kobe,” a trained Police Service Dog (PSD) assigned to the District EOD and Canine Unit (DECU-MPD). Kobe is one of their top-performing Explosive Detection Dogs (EDD) and is currently serving in Metro Manila.

The unit clarified that Kobe was in good health prior to his deployment. His slim appearance is the result of a 15-day refresher training conducted from May 26 to June 13, 2025. The training helped sharpen his skills in detecting the scent of explosives and tested his ability to perform his duties effectively. Due to the physical demands of the training, Kobe appeared thinner than usual, but he remains strong and healthy enough to continue serving the public.

RECU-NCR further explained that dogs like Kobe, particularly the Belgian Malinois breed used in K9 units, undergo strict screening and intensive training before being cleared for active duty. These dogs are carefully selected and trained to ensure they meet the standards required for public service.

The unit also assured the public that all K9 dogs under their care receive proper nutrition and are regularly checked by the office’s veterinarians. They emphasized their commitment to the health and well-being of their service dogs, recognizing the important role these animals play in ensuring public safety.

RECU-NCR concluded their statement by expressing gratitude to the public for their concern and reaffirmed their continued commitment to the proper care of their K9 partners. They stressed that their dogs are vital partners in public service and will always be treated with the care and respect they deserve.
