Vice Pres. Sara Duterte Speaks on Political Dynasty in PH
SARA DUTERTE – The Vice President claimed she will support the anti-political dynasty law even expressing her willingness to be the author.
Undeniably, political dynasty is getting more and more rampant in the Philippine politics now. Several candidates in the 2025 Elections were either the spouse, children, siblings, and nephews or nieces of incumbent officials. Thus, the popular surnames in the Philippine political field are increasing, too.

The Duterte is one of the most popular clans in the Philippine politics. Former Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte just won mayor of Davao City again and his son, outgoing Davao Mayor Baste Duterte, is also set to become the vice mayor. Davao Congressman Paolo Duterte also won in his bid for reelection while their sister, Inday Sara, is vice president.

The grandson of former Pres. Duterte, Omar Duterte, will also join his dad, Cong. Paolo Duterte, in the House of Representatives after winning as the second district representative of Davao. Recently, amid their family securing several posts in the government, Vice Pres. Sara Duterte spoke about political dynasty.
Political dynasty which refers to a situation wherein several members of the family hold elected positions is a controversial topic in the Philippines. There are calls for a law against political dynasty. Unexpected, based on a post of ABS-CBN News, Vice Pres. Sara Duterte will support an anti-political dynasty law despite that she is coming from a family holding several elected positions in the government.

During an interview, Vice Pres. Sara Duterte acknowledged that she came from a political dynasty. According to her, no one is more expert than her when it comes to it, thus, she campaigns on people to ask first about the capacity and capabilities of a person running for a government office.
“Ako ‘yung may pinaka malaking at solid ang kredibilidad to speak about political dynasty because I come from a political dynasty so wala ng mas matindi pang experts sa political dynasty. Ako ‘yun. I’m campaigning about us selecting people automatically based on their family affiliation. We should ask the person first — ‘Okay, Duterte ka. Ano ba ang kredibilidad mo? Ano ba ang kapasidad mo? Okay Marcos ka. Ano ba ang abilidad mo? Ano ba ang kapasidad mo?'” she said.
According to Vice Pres. Duterte, the vote for the family members of an incumbent government official should not be automatic. She stressed that asking questions about the capacity and capability of a candidate for election is the most that voters can do.
“Hindi automatic ‘yun na parang pag anak, asawa, kapatid, pamangkin, automatic. That is the most that we can do as voters, question the capacity and the competence of the candidate,” the Vice President said.
Based on the post, during the interview, Vice Pres. Sara Duterte surprisingly said she will support an anti-dynasty law. She even expressed her willingness to be an author of a law on political dynasty.
“Suportahan ko ba ang batas ng anti-political dynasty? Yes. Bibigyan nila ako ng pagkakataon na sumulat ako ‘yung susulat, ako ‘yung pinakamagaling sa political dynasty… ‘pag binigyan ninyo ako ng chance na sumulat, ako susulat,” Duterte said.
Vice Pres. Sara Duterte was disappointed by the results of the 2025 Elections. She called on the Filipino people to help in making a strong opposition.
