Malacañang Confirms Removal of Antique Principal

Antique Principal Removed Following Toga Incident

Malacañang has officially confirmed the removal of Venus Divinia Nietes from her post as principal of Col. Ruperto Abellon National High School in Laua-an, Antique.

Nietes became the center of controversy after a graduation ceremony incident where she allegedly ordered graduating students to remove their togas and withheld the distribution of their diplomas. The incident, which drew widespread criticism online and on social media, prompted immediate action from the national government.

According to Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Atty. Claire Castro, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. issued a direct order to address the situation. In response, Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Sonny Angara promptly acted on the president’s directive and removed Nietes from her position as school principal.

However, Castro clarified that the president has no authority to revoke a teacher’s license, as that falls under the jurisdiction of the Department of Education. As of now, Nietes remains a licensed educator and may still be allowed to teach or be assigned to a different role, depending on the outcome of further evaluations of her conduct.

The Palace also confirmed that no final administrative charges have been filed, as investigations are still ongoing. The outcome of the inquiry will determine whether formal complaints will be pursued and what disciplinary actions, if any, will be imposed.

The graduation ceremony incident sparked public outrage, with many questioning the principal’s actions and the emotional impact on the students involved. Reports also suggest that previous complaints against Nietes may be reviewed as part of the ongoing investigation.

Although she has been removed from her post, the situation continues to develop as education authorities determine the next steps. The Department of Education is expected to handle the matter with fairness, ensuring accountability while protecting the rights of all parties involved.
