Man Arrested After Faking Robbery to Cover Up Losing Electric Bill Money to STL Betting

Man Faces Charges for False Robbery Claim Over Lost STL Bet

SAMAL ISLAND – A man ended up in jail after lying to the police about being robbed. He claimed that armed men held him up and took a large amount of money. Later, he admitted that he made up the story because he had actually lost the money while gambling on Small Town Lottery (STL). The money was meant to pay the electric bill and was given to him by his wife.

The man said that the robbery happened in Barangay San Agustin, Samal Island. In response, the police quickly set up checkpoints in the area, stopping vehicles to catch the supposed suspects. This caused delays for several motorists.

However, as officers continued to question the man, they noticed his story kept changing. This raised doubts, and after further investigation, he finally confessed that no robbery had taken place.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Hamlet Lerios, chief of the Island Garden City of Samal (IGACOS) police, the man admitted that he used the ₱10,000 from his wife to bet on STL and lost all of it. The police have filed a case against him for giving false information to authorities, which is a violation under Presidential Decree 90.

Lt. Col. Lerios reminded the public that police officers are trained to investigate and are not easily fooled. He also warned that lying to the police carries legal consequences.

Meanwhile, gambling might seem fun or harmless at first, but it often leads to serious problems. One major issue is financial loss. Most gamblers lose more than they win, affecting their ability to pay bills or afford basic needs. It can also lead to debt and stress. In many cases, people keep gambling in hopes of winning back their losses, creating a harmful and hard-to-break cycle.
