DepEd Probes Graduation Toga Issue in Antique
DEPED – The Department of Education, through the Schools Division of Antique, has expressed deep concern over an unfortunate incident that occurred during the End-of-School-Year (EOSY) rites at Col. Ruperto Abellon National School (CRANS) in Guisijan, Laua-an, Antique, on April 15, 2025. In a statement, the division said it is saddened by what transpired and is taking immediate steps to investigate and address the matter appropriately.
According to reports, the school principal unexpectedly instructed graduating students to remove their togas during the ceremony. A video circulating online captured the moment, showing the principal onstage telling the students to take off their graduation gowns. The instruction visibly disheartened not only the graduates but also their parents and family members, who had come to witness and celebrate this important milestone. For many students, wearing a toga represents years of dedication, sacrifice, and academic achievement, making the experience deeply meaningful.
Adding to the confusion, a man—believed to be a teacher—was seen approaching the stage, seemingly questioning the decision. He was quickly ushered away by other faculty members in an effort to keep the situation under control. Comments from netizens revealed that some parents had previously agreed to allow their children to wear togas as a meaningful gesture for the event. Unfortunately, this was not approved by the principal, who reportedly insisted on the use of school uniforms with the official graduation sash or sablay only.

DepEd Order No. 009, series of 2023, allows the wearing of togas or sablay during graduation but clarifies that it is not mandatory. Schools have the option to allow either but should not enforce strict policies without proper consultation or clear communication with students and parents.

DepEd Antique has formed an investigation team and has requested official incident reports from the school. It has assured the public that no graduating student will be denied their diplomas or certificates, and that support will be provided to address any mental or emotional distress caused by the incident. The department emphasized that it is treating the matter with urgency, and further updates will be released through appropriate channels.
