Young Barangay Chairman Killed in Lanao del Sur
LANAO DEL SUR – A 25-year-old barangay chairman was killed in an ambush on Wednesday morning in Malabang, drawing attention once again to the ongoing safety and peace issues in the area.
The victim was identified as Binhar Jalambre Alon Jawad, the barangay captain of Barangay Baraas in the town of Picong, Lanao del Sur. He died from several gunshot wounds after unknown attackers fired at his vehicle. Jawad was traveling with a companion, 20-year-old Norhan Sarip, on their way to a graduation ceremony when they were attacked along a diversion road in Barangay Montay, Malabang. Jawad was rushed to the nearest hospital but was declared dead on arrival. Sarip, who was also injured in the attack, survived and is currently recovering.
Initial reports from the police stated that the two were riding in a sport utility vehicle (SUV) when gunmen suddenly opened fire. Authorities have not yet confirmed how many people were involved in the attack or what type of weapons were used. A deeper investigation is currently underway to determine the motive behind the ambush. In the meantime, police have launched a manhunt to find the suspects, who quickly escaped after the shooting.

Jawad’s death has deeply affected the local community. As a barangay chairman, he played an important role in leading and serving the people in his area. His killing highlights the risks that some public officials still face, especially in areas where violence linked to politics and armed groups remains a problem.

Although investigators are still unsure of the exact motive behind the incident, they are exploring all possible reasons, including political motives and local conflicts. The province of Lanao del Sur has long faced issues with peace and safety, making this case part of a broader concern. Authorities have pledged to continue the investigation and take steps to ensure justice is served.
