Doctor Who Treated Patients for Free Receives Help After Cancer Diagnosis
DR. MICHAEL ZOLLICOFFER – A doctor who provided free treatment to patients lost his insurance after a cancer diagnosis, but his patients started a GoFundMe and raised over $100,000.
Affectionately known as Dr. Z, he has dedicated decades to serving his community in Northwest Baltimore, never turning away a patient who couldn’t afford care. For nearly 40 years, he has prioritized people over payments, treating entire families across generations. His dedication has made him a beloved figure, with patients trusting him not only for his medical expertise but also for his unwavering compassion.
Despite his selfless service, Dr. Z recently faced a devastating challenge—being diagnosed with two types of cancer, one in his kidneys and another in his rectum. To make matters worse, a gap in his Medicare coverage left him unable to afford the treatments he urgently needed. A bureaucratic issue resulted in his claims being denied, leaving the doctor who had always been there for others suddenly without help himself.
Even amid his battle, Dr. Z refused to step away from his practice. He continued seeing patients daily, offering the same care and dedication as always. Many of his patients, touched by his kindness over the years, knew they couldn’t let him face this struggle alone.
Determined to help the man who had helped so many, his patients launched a crowdfunding campaign. The response was overwhelming—nearly 1,000 people contributed, raising over $100,000 to cover his medical expenses. Thanks to their support, Dr. Z was able to resume treatment and eventually reinstate his insurance coverage.
Now, with his health improving, Dr. Z remains committed to his community. He plans to use any leftover donations to give back, ensuring that others receive the help they need. Despite the hardships, he remains grateful for the experience, believing it has reinforced the power of generosity and human connection.
