Darryl Yap Shares Photo of Cristine Reyes Channeling Shan Cai
DARRYL YAP – The controversial director took to the social networking site, Facebook, wherein he posted a photo of Cristine Reyes channeling the late Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu.
Previously, Cristine Reyes faced backlash after combining a personal birthday greeting with a tribute to the late Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu. Reyes honored Hsu by posting an old photo of them together on Instagram. In her caption, she wrote, “Rest in peace, Shan Cai, our childhood favorite. Also, happy 36th [birthday] to me today 2•5•25.” The mention of Shan Cai referred to Hsu’s iconic role in the hit Taiwanese series Meteor Garden.
However, many felt that blending a personal celebration with a memorial tribute was inappropriate. Critics believed the post lacked the respect and solemnity expected in a time of mourning. The backlash was immediate, leading Reyes to delete the post.

In response, she took to Instagram Stories to express her frustration. She questioned whether it was wrong to acknowledge her birthday and pointed out the harsh scrutiny public figures face.
“Happy birthday to me. Is that okay now? Does everything always have to be perfect?” she wrote. “It’s forbidden to make mistakes nowadays. There’s cruelty in return for mistakes, right? Perhaps I am indeed mourning on my birthday. Good? There are so many critics in the world.”
