Ilocos Norte Hit by Grass Fire Affecting 200 to 300 Hectares of Mountainous Area
ILOCOS NORTE – A grass fire broke out in the mountainous area of Carasi on January 30, 2025, as reported by the Office of Civil Defense (OCD). The exact cause of the fire remains undetermined. The fire has affected an estimated 200 to 300 hectares, primarily impacting parts of Barangay Barbaquezo and Barangay Virbira.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) confirmed that 87 responders were sent to control the fire, with one Sokol air asset assisting in aerial reconnaissance and firefighting operations. The fire’s damages are still being assessed, and further investigation is underway.
Photos and videos shared from the scene showed the extent of the fire, with thick smoke blanketing the area and flames illuminating the mountains at night. Authorities also prioritized protecting the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) greening program, a coffee plantation, and the Mt. Lamin campsite.
In an effort to contain the fire, responders have been working to establish a fire break to prevent the fire from spreading further. While the damage is still being evaluated, efforts to control the situation are ongoing. The situation is being closely monitored, and additional updates are expected.
Meanwhile, a grass fire, also called a wildfire or bushfire, is a fast-moving fire that affects areas with dry grass and plants. These fires happen when dry grass and other plants catch fire, often caused by human actions, lightning, or conditions like heat and drought.
Grass fires can spread quickly because of the wind, dry weather, and how easily grass burns. They can cause a lot of damage to the environment, destroying plants, animals’ homes, and posing danger to people and wildlife. While some grass fires are controlled or started on purpose, many can get out of control, especially in rural or hilly areas, leading to evacuations and emergency response efforts.
