Mall Employee Stabbed by Bagger Over a Game of ‘Bato-Bato Pick’

Bato-Bato Pick Leads to Mall Employee Being Stabbed by Bagger

BATO-BATO PICK – A bagger stabbed a mall merchandiser in Davao City after an argument that reportedly started over a simple game of rock-paper-scissors.

According to a report from Bajada Police Station 18, the incident occurred around 8:00 PM while the victim was on a break from work. As he walked towards the employee entrance-exit door, the suspect, who worked as a bagger at a nearby shopping mall, suddenly approached him.

Without warning, the suspect pulled out a knife and stabbed the victim in the shoulder. The wounded employee quickly ran back inside the mall to seek help from security guards. However, by the time the guards responded, the suspect had already fled.

Initial investigations revealed that the suspect became angry after seeing the victim playing rock-paper-scissors with his girlfriend and other colleagues. The suspect was reportedly upset when he saw the victim playfully tapping his girlfriend on the forehead, which led to a confrontation.

Shortly after, the suspect sent the victim a message via Facebook Messenger, saying, “Atangan taka sa inyong trabahoan ha! Istoryahon tika!” (I will wait for you at your workplace! We need to talk.)

Authorities conducted a follow-up operation but failed to locate the suspect at his residence in Agdao, Davao City. However, a few hours later, he voluntarily surrendered, accompanied by his mother and girlfriend. The victim identified the suspect as his attacker, and the suspect was taken into custody at Bajada Police Station 18. He is now facing charges of frustrated murder.

Meanwhile, Bato-Bato Pick is the Filipino version of Rock-Paper-Scissors. In this simple game, two players make hand gestures—Bato (Rock), Papel (Paper), or Gunting (Scissors)—while chanting “Bato-Bato Pick!” The winner is determined by the rules: Rock beats Scissors, Scissors beats Paper, and Paper beats Rock. If both players choose the same gesture, they tie and play again. It is commonly used in the Philippines to make decisions or as a fun activity.
