Couple About to Tie the Knot This Year Passes Away After a Road Accident in Ilocos Sur
ILOCOS SUR – A couple who were set to marry this year tragically passed away in a vehicular accident in San Emilio.
The victims, identified as 26-year-old Ibrahim Cardenas and 25-year-old Fatima Claire Pis-oy, were residents of Barangay Cabaroan in San Emilio. The accident occurred on Saturday morning as the couple traveled in a truck driven by Cardenas along the national road in Barangay Paltoc. Reports state that Cardenas suddenly lost control of the vehicle due to brake failure. The truck veered off the road, crashed into the base of a mountain, and overturned.
Both sustained severe injuries and were declared dead on arrival at the hospital. The heartbreaking incident has left their families and community mourning the untimely loss of the couple, who were looking forward to starting a new chapter in their lives.
In Filipino culture, there is a superstitious belief that couples who are set to marry should avoid traveling, especially long-distance trips, before their wedding day because it might lead to accidents or other misfortunes. This belief stems from the idea that bad spirits or negative energy might intervene to prevent the couple from uniting in marriage.
The superstition is rooted in the broader Filipino concepts of usog (jinx) and pagpag (avoiding bad luck by preventing consecutive unfortunate events). It is believed that traveling could “invite” bad omens or accidents that may jeopardize the couple’s future together. Elders often advise couples to stay close to home and focus on preparations, emphasizing safety and harmony as they approach their union.
While many modern couples may dismiss this belief as outdated, others still follow it out of respect for tradition and the influence of older family members who strongly adhere to these cultural norms.
