Davao del Sur Farmer Turns Dream of Growing Apples into Reality
BENZONE KENNEDY SEPE – A farmer from Davao del Sur has successfully grown apples despite the warm climate of the Philippines.
Traditionally, it was believed that apple trees could not thrive in the country due to its unsuitable weather. However, Sepe, a Bachelor of Agricultural Technology graduate from Davao del Sur State College, proved that with determination and experimentation, it is possible.
Since 2020, Sepe has documented the growth of his apple trees, planting various types in his orchard. One of the successful varieties he cultivated is the Wambugu Apple, known for its ability to flourish in warmer climates.
Sepe shared that it had been his dream to visit America to see apple trees in person, believing that such trees couldn’t grow in the Philippines. “Noon Pangarap ko talagang makapunta ng America para makakita ng Apple Trees. Since matagal pa yata ako makapunta dun, itinanim ko nalang ang pangarap ko,” Sepe said. “Ngayon pupunta lang ako sa likod ng bahay lipat sa ibang lote may apple trees na madali pang puntahan,” he added.
Sepe’s orchard is open to the public, allowing visitors to buy fruits and grafted apple trees so they can try growing their own. In addition to apples, Sepe has also successfully cultivated cherries, another fruit not commonly grown in the Philippines.
An apple is a round, edible fruit produced by the apple tree (Malus domestica). It is one of the most widely cultivated fruits in the world and comes in various colors, including red, green, and yellow, with different varieties offering distinct flavors ranging from sweet to tart.
Apples are believed to have originated in Central Asia, particularly in the region of Kazakhstan, where wild apple species still grow today. Over time, they spread to other parts of the world through trade and migration. Ancient civilizations, including those in Greece and Rome, cultivated apples, and they became more widespread through the centuries. Today, apples are grown in temperate climates worldwide, with major producers including China, the United States, Poland, and India.
