GAB Revokes Professional Basketball License of John Amores
JOHN AMORES – The controversial basketball player’s professional career has abruptly ended after the Games and Amusements Board (GAB) revoked his license.
This decision follows an investigation into John Amores’ involvement in a shooting incident in Laguna last September, during which he and his brother faced attempted homicide charges. Both were accused of firing shots after a heated altercation during a basketball game involving a wager. The two surrendered the following day and were later released on bail.
In its ruling, GAB found Amores guilty of “conduct unbecoming of a professional basketball player,” effectively barring him from participating in any professional games under its jurisdiction, including those in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). The decision, dated December 4, was signed by GAB chairman Atty. Francisco Rivera and commissioners Manuel Plaza and Angel Bautista.
The PBA had previously suspended Amores for the entire Commissioner’s Cup without pay, citing “conduct detrimental to the league.” He was also required to undergo counseling to address his violent tendencies. Despite this, he remained part of the NorthPort Batang Pier, participating in team activities and outreach programs, though he was prohibited from game venues during his suspension.
Amores’ troubled history extends beyond the recent incident. In 2022, during NCAA Season 98, he attacked multiple College of St. Benilde players during a game, leading to his indefinite suspension and expulsion from the Jose Rizal University basketball program. He was also involved in a separate altercation during a preseason game against the University of the Philippines.
Despite these controversies, Amores was drafted 51st overall by NorthPort in the 2023 PBA Rookie Draft. He had shown flashes of potential, averaging 5.1 points and 1.6 rebounds in his last conference. However, his recurring misconduct overshadowed his efforts to rebuild his career.
This latest development marks a significant setback for Amores, who had promised to reform but now faces an uncertain future in basketball. His actions have cost him not only his license but also the opportunity to continue his professional career.
