MMFF Called Out for ‘Unfair’ Cinema Allocation for Entries

Netizens Criticize MMFF for ‘Unfair’ Cinema Allocation

MMFF – The Metro Manila Film Festival faced criticism from netizens over the “unfair” number of cinemas allotted for this year’s entries.

The MMFF is an annual film festival organized by the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) in the Philippines. Established in 1975, it showcases Filipino-produced films, running from Christmas Day to early January.

During the festival, local cinemas exclusively screen approved Filipino films, except for IMAX and 3D theaters. The event features a grand parade of movie floats with stars from participating films and concludes with the “Gabi ng Parangal” or Awards Night.

The MMFF traces its roots to the Manila Film Festival, founded in 1966 by then-Manila Mayor Antonio Villegas. Over the years, it has evolved to emphasize artistry, technical excellence, and cultural value in its film selection.

The MMFF 2024 entries include the comedy “And the Breadwinner Is…,” the suspense-drama “Green Bones,” the musical “Isang Himala,” and the action-family film “The Kingdom.” Horror fans can look forward to “Strange Frequencies: Taiwan Killer Hospital” and “Espantaho.” Romance films include “Hold Me Close” and “My Future You,” while action-thriller lovers can enjoy “Topakk.” Mystery and suspense await in “Uninvited.”

However, the MMFF faced backlash for its “unfair” cinema allocation practice. Film critic Philbert Dy revealed the limited number of cinemas assigned to entries like Green Bones and Isang Himala. “‘ve been told that as of now, Green Bones will only have 40 cinemas nationwide. Isang Himala will have fewer than that. What’s the point of having ten films if they aren’t given equal opportunity?” he wrote.

Isang Himala director Pepe Diokno confirmed Dy’s statement, saying: “Hi everyone, been told that “Isang Himala” has only 31 cinemas so far (bec of the “genre”, lack of “box office stars”). Hope you can still give our film a chance, and if you like it, your support will help convince more cinemas to screen us. Pls pre-book your tickets here.”

As of press time, the MMFF has yet to issue a statement addressing the criticism.
