10-Year-Old Seeks Help with Math Homework via 911
WISCONSIN – A 10-year-old boy in Shawano made an unusual 911 call on November 19, 2024, asking for help with his math homework.
The Shawano Sheriff’s Office shared the heartwarming and somewhat amusing incident on their official Facebook page. According to the post, the boy explained that he called 911 because he had no one at home to help him with his math assignment. His family, he said, wasn’t very good at math either. Although 911 is meant for emergencies, dispatcher Kim Krausena was sympathetic to the boy’s situation and explained that homework was not an appropriate reason to call 911.
Despite this, Krausena offered to assist the boy by asking him about the math problem. The child’s assignment involved a complex decimal computation, and Krausena, who wasn’t able to solve it herself, reached out to Deputy Sheriff Chase Mason, who was in the area. Deputy Mason, despite admitting that he wasn’t very skilled in math either, agreed to help. He brought along his stepson, who was close to the boy’s age, to lend a hand.
In the end, the deputy gave the boy his business card and reminded him that 911 should only be used for life-threatening situations. For non-emergencies, he advised the boy to use the non-emergency line next time.
According to PEP.ph, the post quickly went viral, gathering over 1.8K reactions, 135 comments, and 455 shares. Many netizens expressed their joy and appreciation for the kindness of the sheriff’s office, calling for more feel-good stories like this. Others humorously pointed out that for a child, solving a tough math problem can indeed feel like an emergency. Meanwhile, some comments raised concerns about the need for better math education and the role of law enforcement in handling non-criminal matters.
